Join Sunny Carvalho as she teaches her unique method of making miniature wool felt scenes. It is not everyday that an artist like Sunny Carvalho comes along and we are thrilled that she has brought this fun and creative course to Create Arts Online. In this course she teaches how to create her version of “Tiny Stitchy Scenes.” These mixed media art pieces can be used as pins, patches, or even can be mounted on wood for use as a small wall hanging.
Sunny starts by creating the faces and heads of her characters and then demonstrates how to use air-dry clay to shape the heads. Then she will show you her unique spin on painting and drawing onto the expressive faces. You can also use Polymer clay to create the heads if you like. Once the heads are ready, Sunny gets right into making the felted wool shapes as she shares her favorite wool versions she prefers. Each part of this process is so creative and the possibilities are limitless.
Sunny demonstrates a variety of hand stitches that can add creative touches as well as other design elements like beads, yarn for hair, and other fun features.
If you are looking for a way to add to your artistic journey as you relax, learn, and create your own “Tiny Stitchy Scenes” for gifts, you are at the right place!
Sunny includes a list of her favorite tools, materials, and resources as well as a step by step PDF of how she creates her felted wool.
Your Instructor
Sunny Carvalho is a mixed media artist living in Pinson, Alabama amid the chaos of too many art supplies. Focusing on functional yet whimsical ceramic ware, hand-sculpted ceramic pendants, freehand stitched characters and mixed media paintings, her quirky characters have found their way into many of the mixed media magazines and books. With an emphasis on the joy of everyday living, her work reflects the humor and oddity of the unique characters residing in her head as they deal with pets, situations, and each other. She began her mixed media career as an instructor with Artfest (a groundbreaking retreat near Seattle that launched the careers of many internationally known artists and had it's final retreat in 2012). Sunny continues to teach live but is thrilled to partner with Create Arts Online and bring her signature works to an online platform.
