Create Arts Online could not be happier to have Sunny Carvalho teaching her online course “Whimsical Character Painting.” Sunny is a very talented and creative mixed media artist. Being a true creative, she often works on a variety of projects on any given day, from mixed media painting to sculpting to sewing and beyond.

In this online course Sunny begins with a blank substrate and in the sections that follow, shows you her method of creating an interesting, fun character. You will watch and learn as she breaks down each part of her painting process into achievable, easy to follow steps.

To start, Sunny gives a simple yet important drawing lesson on how all of her characters start out simply as shapes. Once you have an idea of how you want to create with these shapes, she gets out her paints and the fun begins. Starting with background layers, Sunny uses a variety of painting techniques to get a unique and creative effect. After your background is painted, you will watch and learn as Sunny teaches how to create all the elements of the face and body on her character.

Sunny’s teaching style allows you to see how you can model your own character’s style by using her techniques to discover your own style with your unique voice. She pulls out all the stops on this course by demonstrating drawing and painting through one of her signature characters. She also teaches using a variety of subjects such as a pet dog, falling teacups, and so much more.

The beauty of this online course versus taking an in-person workshop is having the opportunity to watch Sunny work. You will see her complete a painting from beginning to end, and how she makes her choices along the way. You will watch as she paints each brush stroke, and observe how she incorporates the other mixed media materials she uses in her creations.

Sunny Carvalho is a mixed media artist living in Pinson, Alabama amid the chaos of too many art supplies. Focusing on functional yet whimsical ceramic ware, hand-sculpted ceramic pendants, freehand stitched characters and mixed media paintings, her quirky characters have found their way into many of the mixed media magazines and books. With an emphasis on the joy of everyday living, her work reflects the humor and oddity of the unique characters residing in her head as they deal with pets, situations, and each other. She began her mixed media career as an instructor with Artfest (a groundbreaking retreat near Seattle that launched the careers of many internationally known artists and had it's final retreat in 2012). Sunny continues to teach live but is thrilled to partner with Create Arts Online and bring her signature works to an online platform.
